Why this idea had to exist
Physics begins not with formulas but with procedures that let different observers compare the same phenomenon. Every measurement is limited by resolution, calibration, environmental variation, and modeling choices.
intuition
Build a picture you can reason with
A measurement is an interval of plausible values attached to a method. Repeating the method reveals scatter; checking against a reference reveals bias. Precision narrows the cluster, while accuracy places it near the target.

Give the intuition a precise edge
Write x=x̂±u with a stated unit and uncertainty convention. Independent random uncertainties often combine in quadrature, while systematic effects require explicit correction or bounds. Significant figures should reflect, not invent, resolution.

Follow the decisions, not just the symbols
Five timing trials scatter around 2.4 s. The mean estimates the center; the spread describes repeatability. If the timer starts 0.1 s late every trial, repetition will not expose that systematic offset—a separate calibration check is needed.

Change one thing and watch the model answer
Measure a repeated interval with a simulated instrument. Separate resolution, random scatter, and a hidden zero offset, then explain which uncertainty each diagnostic can reveal.

Answer before opening the explanation. Retrieval is evidence only when the answer is produced without a hint.
Why can repeated measurements fail to reveal a systematic error?
A shared bias can shift every trial in the same direction, producing a tight but inaccurate cluster.
